Management of Employees in Probation Period

Probation period is a period of time agreed in a labor contract for mutual understanding and inspection between an enterprise and employees. Once a probation period is agreed in a labor contract, management of the employees in probation period has become a special issue. Enterprises should pay attention to the following aspects:

(1) Employees in probation period and employees after expiration of probation period have similarities and differences. Employees in probation period are formal staff and should enjoy the treatment for formal staff. However, they should be treated differently. Since employees in probation period have the right to terminate labor relations with the enterprise at any time without any restriction, the wage agreed should not be too high and financed training should not be arranged;

(2) An enterprise should designate personnel to observe the employees in probation period from several aspects and fully grasp the ideas and business capabilities of the employees, in order to find out problems timely;

(3) An enterprise should offer examination and assessment on employees’ working ability and business capability according to their posts before expiration of the probation period to judge whether the employees meet the employment requirements. The enterprise may dissolve labor contracts with unqualified employees before expiration of the probation period.
